“Although my heart was full of sadness at least I would be safe with this band of war worn warriors.”

I was born in the hamlet of Cwmgiedd in the county of Brecknock but my father moved us to Llanandras in Powys so that he could visit us more often, for he was oft away. Mam and my younger brother died of a fever so Dada took me with him in his search for a Cymru that longed to be free; I joined the band of men who Dada called Y Meibion for he liked well their company, I made myself useful cooking, sewing and the like - Dada taught me to use the Bow for small game and to tickle trout so there was always good fare on our table – the burly Archers approved

The men did battle in Ireland, France and fought for our Prince Owain Glyndwr. It was at one of these battles that my beloved father died, I was inconsolable but I had no need to fear for the Meibion said that they had promised Will to look to me should anything befall him. Although my heart was full of sadness at least I would be safe with this band of war worn warriors.

One member of Meibion in particular took care of me and I was soon wed to Mul of Ceredigion.

On a raiding party to France on our way home I noticed a lad hiding in the ditch, the lad turned out to be a young girl fearing for her safety. I persuaded Meibion to take her with us for her husband had died and she was left to fend for herself. Being big hearted the lads took her in willingly. Nell and I soon became firm friends, which has served me well.

The mighty Welsh Bowman were indeed a force to be reckoned with, and life was hard but good until the day the fight to free Cymru was lost and we ran for our lives. We were forced to take the English King’s pardon to survive; he bought our Bows but not our hearts or minds. To this day we still wait for the call to fight once more to free our beloved Country.

The men of Meibion were soon off to France with Henry V - Nell (who was now married to Llew y Goch) and I waiting patiently at home - they returned war weary, but my man had suffered an injury and no matter what we did for him he died soon after. Once again I was left alone but Nell and Llew took me into their household saying that they had promised Mul to take care of me. I wondered what I had done to deserve such good friends.

Meibion was all but disbanded now which meant we needed to attach ourselves to another group to give us protection. It seemed a natural choice that we joined The Freemen of Gwent as we had oft been in the same battles as these folk over the years, and they were a mixed bunch of Archers, Men at Arms and Knights with their women.

It pleased me to join them and made me feel good and safe for my husband had always had a great liking for the people within the Freemen of Gwent.

We are now members of the FOG and go about our business under their protection. Llew, although still an Archer, these days he is oft abroad for he now has dealings as a wine trader which means a better living for us. For I benefit too as I am indeed treated well and regarded as a sister.
